Nigerian-Australian Charged Over Alleged $5m Disability Scheme Fraud in Australia

A 38-year-old Nigerian-Australian citizen, Foluso Omole, has been charged in Australia over his alleged involvement in a five-million-dollar fraud scheme targeting the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Omole was arrested at Adelaide Airport on Aug. 14 while allegedly preparing to board a one-way flight to Nigeria.

He appeared before a court on Monday, where prosecutors alleged that he improperly obtained information from an employee of the National Disability Insurance Agency and used it to fraudulently obtain benefits under the NDIS.

The accused, who reportedly worked as an NDIS coordinator and operated two businesses, is also alleged to have transferred a significant portion of the suspected proceeds to Nigeria, where his wife resides.

Omole is facing two charges of dealing with proceeds of crime valued at more than one million dollars.

He has not entered a plea to the charges.

The court denied him bail after authorities argued that he posed a flight risk, following his arrest at the airport while preparing to travel to Nigeria.

The matter is expected to continue before the Australian court.
