Okocha Reveals How Iconic Goal Against Kahn Changed His Career

Former Super Eagles captain Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed that his unforgettable solo goal against legendary German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was a major turning point in his football career.

Okocha recalled the famous moment during an appearance on the Obi-Wan podcast on Monday, saying the goal helped him gain international recognition while he was still playing for Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Nigerian midfielder faced Kahn, who was then enjoying one of the strongest periods of his career before his move to Bayern Munich. Okocha dazzled spectators by dribbling past the goalkeeper before calmly finishing into the net.

According to the former Super Eagles captain, the goal received extensive television coverage across Europe and significantly raised his profile outside Germany.

“It was Oliver Kahn, and he was having his best season,” Okocha said.

“That goal changed my life. That was when I gained recognition outside Germany.”

Okocha explained that he did not initially plan to hold onto the ball for so long. Instead, he was looking for the right opportunity to take his shot after repeatedly finding opponents in his path.

“I didn’t mean to hold onto it that long. Whenever I want to shoot, I see somebody in front, so I was just trying to find the right moment to shoot,” he said.

The former Frankfurt star also revealed that his manager later joked that he would have been dropped permanently if the spectacular attempt had failed.

“The saving grace was it did go in, because even the manager told me, had he been there, I didn’t score that goal, as long as he remains manager of this team, you will never play again,” Okocha recalled.

Despite having met Kahn years later, Okocha said they have never discussed the famous incident. He jokingly attributed this to the German legend’s intimidating personality.

“I’ve met him, but you don’t want to discuss that. He’s a big lad, and he never smiles,” he said.

Okocha began his European career in Germany before establishing himself at Eintracht Frankfurt. He later enjoyed successful spells with Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers, becoming widely regarded as one of Africa’s most skilful and influential attacking midfielders.

His memorable goal against Kahn remains one of the standout moments of his illustrious career.
