Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that prominent political and business figures allegedly contacted him to delete his social media posts during the Osun State governorship election.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, Davido said he faced significant pressure while monitoring developments during the election, particularly as results from polling units were being collated.
The singer alleged that huge sums of money were deployed in an attempt to influence the outcome of the election. According to him, more than ₦110 billion was allegedly brought into Osun State in connection with efforts to manipulate the process.
“I just confirmed today. They spent N110 billion,” Davido said, claiming that an insider provided information about the movement of cash during the election.
He warned that allowing such alleged practices to succeed could create a dangerous precedent for future elections in Nigeria, where violence and financial inducements could become increasingly influential.
Davido Says His Team Did Not Spend Money on Election Day
Davido said his family and supporters deliberately avoided distributing money at polling units, choosing instead to rely on voters and public vigilance.
“We didn’t spend a dime on election day. All we could do was just pray that these people take their money and vote for us,” he stated.
He also claimed that voters in Osun resisted attempts to disrupt the electoral process, describing the reaction as evidence that citizens were becoming increasingly unwilling to tolerate electoral manipulation.
According to Davido, some voters confronted individuals who allegedly attempted to interfere with ballot materials.
Davido Reveals Calls From Akpabio and Dangote
The music star also disclosed that he received calls from influential Nigerians during the period when he was posting updates about the election on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Davido alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was among those attempting to reach him and that he was also contacted by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote.
He said the calls were connected to requests that he remove some of his posts documenting events surrounding the election.
“I can’t delete anything. Uncle Aliko called me too. I said, ‘Uncle, I’m not deleting until the INEC announcement,’” Davido recounted.
The singer maintained that he would continue posting updates until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announced the results.
Davido Praises Osun Voters
Davido said the outcome of the election demonstrated the strength of grassroots support, arguing that political leaders who stand with the people can expect citizens to support them in return.
“My uncle should be an example to all other government officials and governors. When you stand by the people, the people will stand by you,” he said.
Davido’s involvement in Osun politics is closely linked to his family. His late uncle, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, was the first civilian governor of Osun State, while another uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the state’s current governor.
The singer has remained vocal about political developments in Osun State and has frequently used his large social media following to comment on issues affecting the state and his family’s political interests.
