A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has alleged that Fulani militants remain the largest perpetrators of violence against Christians in Nigeria.
Moore made the assertion in a post on his X account on Wednesday while commenting on the security situation in parts of the country.
The lawmaker said he had spent years investigating what he described as the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
He acknowledged what he described as progress made by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump in degrading the operational capabilities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
However, Moore alleged that attacks linked to armed Fulani militants continued to claim lives, particularly in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
“As I have been saying since I started investigating the genocide against Christians in Nigeria, Fulani militants are by far the largest perpetrators of violence against Christians in Nigeria,” he wrote.
He added that although progress had been recorded against Boko Haram and ISWAP, greater efforts were needed to address violence in the Middle Belt.
“Nevertheless, the Trump Administration has made historic progress against Boko Haram and ISWAP, but we must also stop the killing in the Middle Belt at the hands of the Fulani if we want to ensure our brothers and sisters in Christ are safe to live and worship without being murdered,” he stated.
The comments come amid recurring attacks on rural communities in Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa and parts of Southern Kaduna, where security authorities have reported repeated incidents of violent attacks by armed groups.
Nigerian authorities have continued to deploy security personnel and implement measures aimed at addressing insecurity in the affected states.
