Catholics around the world today, September 8, celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorating the birth of the Mother of God and honouring her as a model of Christian virtue.
The feast invites the faithful to reflect on the life of Mary and the virtues she demonstrated throughout her earthly journey. For Catholics, her example offers encouragement to remain faithful to God despite the challenges and difficulties of life.
On this special occasion, the faithful are encouraged to seek Mary’s intercession and strive to imitate the virtues that characterised her life.
Deep Humility
Mary’s profound humility is reflected in her description of herself as the “handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). In the Magnificat, she also proclaimed God’s favour towards her in her lowliness (Luke 1:48).
Her humility reminds Christians that every good thing accomplished in life ultimately comes through God’s grace.
Lively Faith
Mary is regarded by Christians as a model of unwavering faith. At the Annunciation, she accepted God’s message and trusted His promise despite not fully understanding how His plan would unfold.
Her example encourages believers to remain steadfast in moments of doubt, uncertainty and difficulty.
Prompt Obedience
Mary’s response to the Angel Gabriel demonstrated her willingness to surrender completely to God’s will: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Her obedience serves as an example of trusting God even when His plans are difficult to understand.
A Life of Prayer
Mary maintained a deep relationship with God throughout her life. Scripture describes her as keeping and pondering events in her heart (Luke 2:19).
Her example reminds Christians of the importance of prayer, contemplation and trust, particularly during moments of hardship and spiritual weakness.
Self-Denial and Sacrifice
Mary consistently placed God’s will above her own desires. From the Annunciation to Calvary, she accepted the sacrifices required by her vocation.
Her life encourages Christians to embrace self-denial when necessary and make sacrifices for the good of others.
Surpassing Purity
Mary is honoured by the Church as a model of purity and holiness. Her life represents a heart completely devoted to God.
Her example encourages the faithful to cultivate pure hearts, noble thoughts and holy desires.
Ardent Love
Christian teaching places love, or charity, at the heart of the life of faith. Mary demonstrated her love for God through her unconditional acceptance of His will and showed love for others through her visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39–45).
Her example points believers towards the two great commandments: loving God above all things and loving one’s neighbour.
Heroic Patience
Mary also demonstrated extraordinary patience throughout her life.
She endured the hardships surrounding the birth of Jesus, the anxiety of searching for Him when He remained behind in Jerusalem as a child, and, most profoundly, the suffering of witnessing her Son’s crucifixion.
Standing at the foot of the Cross, Mary remained faithful despite her immense sorrow.
Angelic Kindness
Mary’s visit to Elizabeth also highlights her kindness and willingness to serve others.
Rather than focusing solely on herself after the Annunciation, she went in haste to support her cousin. Her example reminds Christians that kindness, compassion and gentle words can bring people closer to one another and to God.
Heavenly Wisdom
Mary is honoured in the Litany of Loreto as “Seat of Wisdom.”
Her life reflects a wisdom centred not on earthly achievements but on loving God, seeking holiness and pursuing what leads to eternal life.
The faithful are encouraged to seek Mary’s intercession for wisdom, good judgment and perseverance in the Christian life.
A Call to Imitate Mary’s Virtues
As Catholics celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the occasion is not only an opportunity to honour her but also to reflect on the virtues she embodied.
Her humility, faith, obedience, prayerfulness, sacrifice, purity, love, patience, kindness and wisdom remain powerful examples for Christians seeking to deepen their relationship with God.
Mary, our Mother and our model, pray for us.
🎉 Happy Birthday, Blessed Mother Mary!
