Nigerian TikToker and content creator Elizabeth Amadou, popularly known as Jarvis, has opened up about her difficult childhood, revealing that she grew up without her father and faced financial hardship while being raised in a family affected by her mother’s bipolar disorder.
Jarvis shared the emotional account during a conversation with her husband, Peller, and Spark Nation founder, Pastor Tobi, at a Sunday service in the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on her childhood, Jarvis described growing up with her mother as challenging, saying her mother’s condition sometimes affected the family’s home environment.
She recalled that her mother could be loving and pleasant at one moment but become violent or verbally abusive at another, making her childhood stressful and emotionally difficult.
Jarvis also revealed that she never grew up with her father. According to her, her mother travelled abroad and returned pregnant before giving birth to her.
She said growing up without a father was particularly difficult because of the challenges her family was already facing.
Jarvis explained that her grandparents played an important role in raising her and her sister. Although she described them as strict, she credited their discipline and guidance with helping shape the person she is today.
Beyond her family struggles, Jarvis said she experienced severe financial hardship as a child. She recalled periods when her family could not afford her school fees, but she was determined not to drop out or resort to negative influences in an attempt to make money.
The TikToker also revealed that there were times when she and her sister struggled to afford food.
She recalled watching cooking videos on TikTok simply to satisfy their cravings before praying for help and going to bed hungry.
According to Jarvis, their difficult circumstances eventually introduced them to TikTok livestreaming.
She said someone contacted her through the platform and told her that she could make money by going live. Although she was initially shy and worried about her family discovering her social-media activities, she eventually began livestreaming alongside her sister.
Jarvis said their first earnings were about $5, but the amount meant a lot to them at the time because of their financial situation.
As they continued, the sisters moved from livestreaming into content creation and gradually built an audience.
Jarvis said her biggest motivation throughout the journey was to support her sister and achieve financial independence.
“I wanted to take care of my sister. I want to be able to provide a living for ourselves,” she said.
What started as an attempt to survive financially eventually developed into a successful career in TikTok livestreaming and content creation.
