The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died at the age of 96.
The monarch’s death was announced on Thursday by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, in a condolence message.
Pantami said the emir died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Ahmed Muhammad Sani II ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, and ruled the Gumel Emirate for nearly 46 years until his death.
In his condolence message, Pantami described the late monarch as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all.
He said the emir devoted his life to the service of his people, the promotion of peace and education, and the preservation of cultural values.
Pantami extended his condolences to the monarch’s immediate family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Jigawa State Government and the people of the state.
He said, “On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation.”
Pantami prayed for the repose of the late emir’s soul and asked God to grant his family, the Gumel Emirate and the people of Jigawa State the strength to bear the loss.
