Inter Milan began their Serie A title defence in impressive fashion on Saturday, sweeping aside newly promoted Monza 4-1 at San Siro.
The Italian champions needed just six minutes to take the lead, with Hakan Calhanoglu firing a powerful long-range effort beyond the Monza goalkeeper.
Monza, back in Italy’s top flight after spending last season in Serie B, responded strongly and drew level in the 29th minute through Gustavo Varela.
Inter regained control shortly after the break when Piotr Zielinski restored their advantage in the 48th minute.
Eight minutes later, Pio Esposito doubled Inter’s lead with a clever backheel finish from Andy Diouf’s cross. Esposito was handed a starting role ahead of Marcus Thuram and rewarded the decision with an impressive performance.
Yann Bisseck completed the scoring in the 63rd minute as Inter underlined their credentials as strong favourites to retain the Scudetto.
England defender John Stones, one of three English internationals signed by Inter during the summer transfer window, made his debut after coming on as a late substitute.
Inter’s emphatic victory provides an early statement of intent as they begin their bid for another Serie A title.
Last season’s runners-up Napoli face Genoa later on Saturday in their opening fixture under new manager Massimiliano Allegri. The former AC Milan coach will be hoping to make an immediate impact after leaving Milan following just one season in charge.
Meanwhile, AC Milan and Juventus will begin their respective campaigns on Sunday as both clubs look to bounce back from disappointing seasons and major summer changes.
Milan host Torino, while Juventus face Frosinone in their opening league fixture.
