Tottenham Hotspur’s huge summer spending failed to deliver an immediate return as they suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Brentford in their opening Premier League fixture on Saturday.
Tottenham have invested more than £200 million ($272 million) in an attempt to rebuild a squad that narrowly escaped relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi handed debuts to four summer signings, with Sandro Tonali, Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke all starting. Mateus Fernandes was introduced after the interval.
However, Brentford, operating on a significantly smaller budget, produced a vibrant performance to expose Tottenham’s defensive weaknesses and leave their expensive rebuilding project facing early questions.
Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt scored in the first half before Michael Kayode added a third shortly after the break.
Brentford could have made the scoreline even more emphatic, but Igor Thiago missed a second-half penalty.
Tottenham’s spending spree is also expected to continue, with Brazil winger Savinho reportedly set to join from Manchester City. The club are also pursuing City forward Omar Marmoush, moves that could push their total summer expenditure beyond £300 million.
De Zerbi had previously called for his players to rediscover the “soul of the team” after Tottenham finished 17th last season.
Instead, his side produced a lifeless display that raised concerns over their character and organisation. The manager also made 20-year-old Archie Gray the youngest captain in Tottenham’s history, but the youngster was unable to inspire a response as Spurs struggled throughout the contest.
The defeat was only Tottenham’s second opening-day loss in the last 11 seasons.
Brentford Take Control
Brentford needed only 12 minutes to take advantage of Tottenham’s defensive uncertainty.
Mamadou Sangare powered through the visitors’ midfield before cutting the ball back for Lewis-Potter, who calmly finished to give the hosts the lead.
Sangare, who joined Brentford from Lens for a club-record £39 million during the summer, was one of the outstanding performers as the hosts repeatedly exposed Tottenham’s lack of intensity in midfield.
Tottenham struggled to create meaningful opportunities, while their defending deteriorated further in the 33rd minute.
Richarlison cheaply lost possession before Lucas Bergvall conceded a free-kick after a weak challenge on Mathias Jensen. Jensen’s powerful effort was poorly dealt with by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who could only parry the ball into the path of Janelt, who finished from close range.
Tonali, signed from Newcastle in a deal reportedly worth £100 million, failed to make an impact and fired well over the crossbar.
De Zerbi responded by introducing Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham for £85 million, along with Rodrigo Bentancur in an attempt to regain control of midfield.
The changes did little to solve Tottenham’s defensive problems.
Just four minutes into the second half, Brentford extended their advantage. Sangare met Nathan Collins’ header from a corner with a powerful effort that struck Kinsky in the face before rebounding into the path of Kayode, who reacted quickest to score from six yards.
Brentford were then awarded a penalty in the 55th minute after Bentancur barged into Kevin Schade, but Thiago struck the post.
The miss denied Brentford an even bigger victory, but Tottenham’s afternoon was already beyond rescue.
With Jon Bon Jovi among those watching from the stands, Tottenham’s performance offered little hope for a quick turnaround despite their enormous investment in the squad.
