Senate Condemns Makinde’s Call for UN Probe Into Oyo School Abduction

    Nigerian-Senate

The Senate has condemned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly, during plenary on Tuesday, described the governor’s request as inappropriate and urged him to avoid trivialising the serious security challenge.

Makinde had, in a statewide broadcast on Monday, called on the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability organisations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of the victims.

Speaking during plenary, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo North) criticised the governor’s position, describing the demand for an international investigation as “not statesmanly” and “politics taken too far”.

Oshiomhole urged the Senate to call on Makinde to desist from what he described as trivialising the rescue efforts by seeking an external probe into the incident.

Following the debate, the Senate unanimously voted to condemn the governor’s call for a UN-led investigation.

The lawmakers maintained that security agencies handling the matter should be allowed to conduct their operations and investigations without unnecessary interference.

The abduction of the pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State had sparked public concern, with calls for improved security measures and a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
