“Treat Them Like Bandits” — Defence Minister Warns Officers Who Refuse to Act Against Terrorists

Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, has warned security personnel deployed against terrorism and banditry against delaying action while waiting for orders before engaging criminal elements.

Musa gave the warning on Wednesday at the commissioning of 62 armoured vehicles and more than 300 motorcycles procured by the Sokoto State Government for security agencies.

The minister said officers must act decisively against terrorists and bandits within the provisions of the rules of engagement.

“Anybody who refuses to shoot a terrorist in the name of waiting for an order, we will treat him like a bandit,” he said.

He, however, cautioned security personnel against abusing their powers, warning them not to harass, intimidate or extort law-abiding citizens.

Musa urged officers to maintain professionalism, discipline and accountability while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property.

The minister described the newly acquired security assets as a significant boost to Sokoto State’s security architecture, saying they would improve the mobility and operational capacity of security agencies.

He said the vehicles and motorcycles would support ongoing efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.

Musa noted that Nigeria’s security challenges were constantly changing as criminal groups continued to adopt new tactics and exploit difficult terrains.

He stressed that security agencies must also adapt through improved mobility, intelligence-driven operations and stronger coordination among relevant agencies.

The minister commended the Sokoto State Government for investing in security infrastructure, describing the initiative as a demonstration of commitment to strengthening security operations in the state.
