The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has arrested two suspects over alleged possession and distribution of illicit drugs in different parts of Benin City, Edo State.
The suspects, identified as Stella Thompson and Efosa Uyi, were reportedly apprehended during separate operations conducted by ESSN operatives as part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of drug-related activities.
Items recovered from the suspects include cannabis (Indian hemp), crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as ice), as well as other substances identified as Colorado, Canadian Loud, and Scottish Loud, allegedly found in large quantities.
Briefing journalists in Benin City, the Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Mr. Festus Ebea, said the arrests underscore the state government’s renewed crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse.
Ebea said the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
“We have arrested two suspects at different points in Benin and will hand them over to the NDLEA. We are working very hard to support the agency in getting rid of those engaged in drug activities in the state,” he said.
He warned that the state would not serve as a safe haven for drug dealers and users, adding that security operatives would continue sustained operations across communities.
Ebea also urged young people to desist from drug abuse, noting that it contributes to social vices and criminal behaviour.
“We are not relenting in combing the state and getting drug addicts and those trading in illicit drugs off the state,” he said.
According to him, the government remains committed to ensuring that offenders are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others, while calling on the media to follow up the case to ensure justice is served.
