Canada Unveils 2026 Express Entry Priorities Targeting Key Sectors

Canadian federal government has announced revised priorities for its Express Entry immigration system in 2026, emphasising specific occupational categories to bolster economic growth, defence capabilities, and labour market needs.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Lena Metlege Diab disclosed the new focus areas during recent speaking notes, introducing three priority categories: senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience, transport occupations, and skilled foreign military personnel.

The minimum work experience threshold for these categories rises to one year from six months, acquired within the last three years, not necessarily continuous.

Express Entry’s category-based selection (CBS), launched in May 2023, has issued over 144,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs), now the sole pathway for those lacking Canadian experience or provincial nomination, with non-CBS draws limited to Canadian Experience Class.

Minister Diab linked the updates to Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy under economic leader Mark Carney’s agenda, while cautioning against using asylum as an immigration backdoor and upholding entry rules for FIFA World Cup 2026 visitors.

    Eligible occupations span:

Senior Managers with Canadian Experience (TEER 0):

Financial, communications, business services (NOC 00012)

Health, education, social services (NOC 00013)

    Trade, broadcasting, services (NOC 00014)

Construction, transport, production, utilities (NOC 00015)

    Researchers with Canadian Work Experience:

    Post-secondary teaching/research assistants (NOC 41201)

    University professors/lecturers (NOC 41200)

    Skilled Military Recruits:

Requires 10 years continuous foreign military service, three-year full-time Canadian Armed Forces job offer, and two-year post-secondary credential; includes operations members (NOC 43204), specialised members (NOC 42102), commissioned officers (NOC 40042).

    Transport Occupations:

Air pilots, flight engineers, instructors (NOC 72600)

    Automotive/truck/bus mechanics (NOC 72410)

    Aircraft mechanics/inspectors (NOC 72404)

    Aircraft instrument/electrical/avionics technicians (NOC 22313)

Ongoing priorities cover French proficiency, healthcare/social services, skilled trades, and education/STEM; agriculture/agri-food retired, with a new physicians’ draw for Canadian-experienced doctors this week. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores factor work experience, education, language, age, and spouse credentials.

These changes, effective 2026, aim to recruit top talent amid NOC 2026 revisions potentially affecting eligibility via updated duties and splits.
