FG Re-arraigns Sowore on Cyberstalking Charge over Tinubu Post

Federal Government has re-arraigned human rights activist Omoyele Sowore before the Federal High Court on a two-count amended charge of alleged cyberstalking against President Bola Tinubu.

FG Re-arraigns Sowore on Cyberstalking Charge over Tinubu Post

The charge stems from Sowore’s August 25, 2025 post on X calling President Tinubu a “criminal” for allegedly lying about corruption in Brazil. Prosecutors claim the statement violates Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act 2024 by transmitting false information likely to cause public unrest.

At Monday’s hearing, DSS counsel Akinlolu Kehinde presented the amended charge naming Sowore alone and sought to commence trial with a witness present.

Sowore’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, objected, citing constitutional and ACJA requirements for front-loading witness lists and statements, which were missing.

Kehinde countered that prior adjournments favoured the defence and such rules apply mainly to magistrates’ courts, offering stand-downs for intelligence witnesses. Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter to January 22 for trial commencement.
