Kwara State Police Command has arrested two foreign nationals over an alleged kidnap and extortion plot and recovered the mobile phone reportedly used to issue threatening calls to a resident.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
She said the operation followed a report lodged at the Okuta Police Division by one S. Ismaila of Okuta, who alleged that he received several threatening telephone calls from an unidentified individual.
According to the complainant, the caller demanded N22 million to prevent his planned abduction.
He also alleged that the caller threatened to kidnap him and kill his younger brother, Musa Ismaila, if the ransom demand was not met.
Ejire-Adeyemi said police operatives immediately launched an intelligence-led operation in collaboration with the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and, with technical support, tracked and arrested two suspects.
She identified the suspects as Yakubu Ismaila and Hadiza Kosia, both nationals of the Republic of Togo.
The police spokesperson said preliminary investigations linked the suspects to the alleged criminal conspiracy.
She added that the suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement during interrogation.
According to her, officers also recovered a mobile phone allegedly used to make the threatening calls, which has been taken into police custody as an exhibit.
Ejire-Adeyemi said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and identify any other persons connected with the alleged plot.
