Imo State Police Command has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media alleging that Fulani herdsmen set a student hostel in Nekede, Owerri, on fire, trapping more than 80 students inside.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Henry Okoye, made the clarification in a statement issued on Sunday.
Okoye described the report, which was widely circulated on Facebook on July 5, as entirely false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
He said there was no incident of Fulani herdsmen attacking or setting any student hostel ablaze in Nekede, contrary to the claims in the viral post.
According to him, the command has verified the report and confirmed that it is fake.
“The report is entirely false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents,” he said.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public to disregard the publication and avoid circulating unverified information capable of creating fear, panic or public disorder.
He advised residents to verify the authenticity of information through credible and official sources before sharing it on social media or other communication platforms.
Okoye reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state and urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through established channels.
He also warned against the spread of fake news, stressing that misinformation could undermine public peace and security.
