NDLEA intercepts UK, Australia-bound cocaine, opioids hidden in carton walls

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted consignments of cocaine and other opioids concealed in carton walls used for packaging clothes and other items bound for the United Kingdom and Australia.

This was disclosed by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Monday.

Babafemi said the seizures were made at a courier company in Lagos on Friday, May 15, during routine examination of export shipments destined for the UK and Australia.

According to him, officers recovered 170 grammes of cocaine sealed in cellophane parcels and hidden inside the walls of a carton containing clothes meant for Australia.

He added that another consignment bound for the United Kingdom contained a variety of opioids, including 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 capsules of tramadol, and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection.

In a related operation, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway on Tuesday, May 12, intercepted a large cache of military-grade ammunition.

Babafemi said a 35-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Hassan, was arrested while allegedly transporting 1,989 rounds of 7.62mm RLA ammunition concealed in sacks of fresh white cassava granules, popularly known as garri.

He noted that the suspect and the recovered ammunition had since been transferred to the appropriate security agency for further investigation.

Also, operatives acting on credible intelligence recovered a 25-litre jerrycan of palm oil used to conceal 1.2 kilogrammes of Tramakin 225mg pills at Kofar Ruwa Motor Park in Kano on Monday, May 11.

The NDLEA said the seizures underscore its continued efforts to disrupt illicit drug trafficking networks and related criminal activities across the country.
