1.09m Customers Metered by DisCOs – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reports that 1,092,399 customers have been measured by electricity distribution companies (DisCos) under the Meter Assets Provider (MAP) and National Mass Metering Program ( NMMP).

NERC said this in its response to an access to information (FOI) request from a group of electricity consumers requesting data on the number of meters distributed by DisCos under the two programs.

The letter, which was signed by Commission Secretary Ada Ozoemena on behalf of its chairman, was obtained by the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to NERC, 508,439 clients have been measured so far under the federal government’s MAP program, which was reported on October 30, 2020 with a target of six million meters by 2023.

The regulator said 583,960 meters had been distributed under the MAP program, adding that 5,855 customers who had paid for prepaid meters had yet to get their meters.

NAN reports that a group, the All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum (AECPF), had asked NERC to provide data on the total number of meters distributed so far by DisCos under the two programs.

The letter dated June 28 and signed by Mr. Adeola Samuel-Ilori, AECPF national coordinator, requested the agency to provide the information within seven days of receipt of the letter in accordance with Article 4 (1 ) (2) of the FOI law.

Samuel-Ilori, while congratulating NERC on responding to the request, said the group had investigated customers who paid under the MAP program and had yet to get their meters.

He said the number was higher than figures released by NERC, adding that the group would soon send a FOI request to the various DisCos to get the detailed breakdown.

“There is a need for this data to be available to our group to help achieve one of the cardinal goals, which includes monitoring the activities of electricity sector stakeholders as they affect consumers,” Samuel-Ilori said. (NAN)
