UK in Turmoil: Keir Starmer Steps Down Amid Mounting Pressure From Within Labour

British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on Monday, June 22, announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street, bringing an abrupt end to a premiership that began with a landslide general election victory in July 2024.

This dramatic development comes barely two years after he led Labour back to power following more than a decade in opposition, triggering an immediate leadership transition during a period of heightened political uncertainty.

Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer defended his record and emphasized the motivation behind his governance, stating, “Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first.”

He highlighted his work transforming the Labour Party from being “politically, financially and morally bankrupt,” focusing heavily on his efforts to tackle anti-Semitism and restore public confidence in the party’s economic and national security credentials.

The departure has intensified speculation regarding his successor, with attention turning to Andy Burnham following his recent victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Labour insiders believe Burnham could emerge as the overwhelming favorite, with active discussions exploring a “coronation” process to avoid a prolonged contest and place a new prime minister in position by the annual party conference in September.
