Babcock University has distanced itself from a certificate circulating on social media and allegedly linked to comedian and content creator, Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, describing the document as fake and unauthorised.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the university said the purported “Honorary Certificate” claiming to award Efe a “First Class Upper” did not emanate from the institution and should be disregarded.
The university clarified that it does not issue honorary certificates in recognition of undergraduate academic performance and has no academic classification known as “First Class Upper.”
It explained that its highest undergraduate classification is “First Class Honours,” which is recognised only through official degree certificates and academic transcripts issued by the Office of the Registrar.
Babcock urged employers, educational institutions, government agencies, professional bodies and members of the public to disregard any unauthorised academic documents purportedly issued in its name and to verify academic credentials through the Office of the Registrar before relying on them for official purposes.
The university also warned that individuals found producing, circulating, presenting or using forged academic documents could face investigation and prosecution under applicable laws relating to forgery and fraud.
It added that it reserved the right to pursue civil and criminal action against any individual or organisation found unlawfully using its name, logo, seal or academic credentials.
