Kano Govt Recalls Teachers in Private, Community Schools

The Kano state government has ordered the immediate recall of teachers on its payroll, but working in private, community and volunteer schools across the state, to fill a gap in public schools.

The directive was released in a statement Tuesday by Aliyu Yusuf, public relations manager at the Ministry of Education, in Kano.

The statement attributed the directive to the education commissioner, who advised the government on the need for the recall in order to address the shortage of teachers in public schools.

“The government recognizes the need to reach out to community and volunteer schools, as provided for in respective laws enacted in the state.

“However, it has been observed that the process has been abused over the years, as some teachers have been in these schools for more than 15 years.

“It was also discovered that some teachers had found other jobs, but were still receiving government salaries. This trend must be stopped, ”the statement said.

Meanwhile, he said the ministry had formed a committee that would invite, screen and document affected teachers for reassignment.

“The committee includes representatives from SUBEB, the Lycée Management Board, the Ministry of Local Government, the Office of the Head of Service and the Ministry of Finance.

“The committee has been tasked with meeting these teachers at the Gidan-Murtala secretariat as of Wednesday June 16, 2021 at 10:00 am.

“All affected schools are advised to reapply for new teacher assignments, if any,” he said.

The statement further warned that any of the affected teachers who deliberately refused to appear before the committee would likely lose their appointment. (NAN)
