MTN Nigeria has emphasised the importance of consistent training and education in developing young athletes, urging students to combine academic pursuits with sports to achieve their potential.
The company’s Trade Development Regional Manager (Sales), Macdaniels Enwemuche, said this while discussing the MTN Champs initiative, a grassroots athletics programme designed to discover and nurture young sporting talents in Nigeria.
Enwemuche said the programme helped young people recognise their potential and pursue their ambitions through discipline, commitment and regular training. He cited the support provided to Ibadan Grammar School, one of the participating schools that ranked among the top performers in the competition.
Through the MTN Champs Academy, the school received a ₦3 million grant alongside sports equipment, including indoor sports materials and track and field gear, to support students’ training and development.
Enwemuche urged the beneficiaries to maintain the equipment and use it for its intended purpose, noting that consistent practice was essential to developing athletes capable of competing at national and continental levels.
“They say practice makes perfect. To get the best out of these young athletes, we encourage and advise them to train consistently, with the goal of becoming the best in track and field in Nigeria and, eventually, across Africa,” he said.
He added that identifying young sporting talents early and providing them with the necessary support were central to MTN Champs, expressing optimism about the future of young African athletes who remained committed to their ambitions.
