NCAA Bans Flight Mode: All Phones Must Be Switched Off During Take-Off and Landing

Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a new directive requiring all passengers to completely switch off their mobile phones during aircraft take-off and landing.

This marks a significant shift from previous practices where devices were typically placed in flight mode.

Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, announced that the regulation governing electronic device usage on flights has now been standardized across the country.

According to him, the move aims to enhance safety protocols and eliminate ambiguity around acceptable device behavior during critical phases of flight.

The announcement follows a recent incident aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, where a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, reportedly clashed with a flight attendant over her refusal to turn off her phone.

The confrontation drew public attention and sparked debate over enforcement of in-flight safety rules.

With this new directive, the NCAA hopes to prevent future misunderstandings and reinforce the importance of compliance with aviation safety standards.
