NAFDAC Warns Against High-Hydroquinone Bleaching Creams

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning against the use of skin-lightening creams containing more than two percent hydroquinone, citing serious health risks including cancer.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, NAFDAC’s Bauchi State Coordinator, Mr. Hamis Yahaya, said, “Applying creams with hydroquinone contents more than two per cent is harmful. Mixing creams by non-experts is wrong.”

Hydroquinone is a chemical compound commonly used in cosmetics to treat hyperpigmentation, including conditions like melasma and age spots. However, Yahaya explained that excessive use poses significant risks to consumers’ health. “Hydroquinone affects the health of the users gradually, including causing cancer,” he said.

Yahaya also highlighted the natural protective benefits of melanin, stating, “The black colour provides natural protection against harmful radiation due to melanin content.”

He stressed that NAFDAC routinely checks products in the market to ensure they meet approved standards and urged consumers to be cautious about the cosmetic products they use.

He appealed to the media to assist in sensitising the public, saying, “The media must create awareness in order to stem down the use of cosmetics that would endanger the lives of consumers.”

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and encouraged Nigerians to avoid unregulated and potentially dangerous skincare products.
