Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo.

Oladipo, who was also an emeritus President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), died unexpectedly on Tuesday evening, Aug. 25, 2026. He was 56.

Sources close to the journalist said Oladipo appeared to be in good health earlier in the day and had continued with his normal activities.

He reportedly went to the gym with his wife before attending to other engagements and made a social media post a few hours before his death.

However, tragedy struck later in the evening when he reportedly became ill while on his way to a meeting.

According to the sources, Oladipo was able to contact his doctor by telephone with the assistance of a bystander.

Despite efforts to revive him and medical guidance provided over the phone, he reportedly died before he could receive medical attention.

The exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, although preliminary reports suggested that he may have suffered a heart attack.

Oladipo was a respected figure in Nigeria’s journalism and digital media industry.

Before establishing The Eagle Online, he worked with prominent media organisations, including The Punch Newspapers, where he built a reputation as an experienced journalist.

His death comes about 18 months after he, his wife and daughter survived the March 2025 tanker fire at Otedola Bridge in Lagos.

The incident destroyed his vehicle, while his longtime mechanic, Rotimi Olaleye, died in the fire.

News of Oladipo’s death has sent shockwaves across the Nigerian media community, with colleagues, members of GOCOP and other journalists expressing grief and offering condolences to his family.

His death represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s journalism profession and the country’s growing digital media industry.
