American missionary pilot Kevin Rideout has been released after spending more than nine months in captivity in Niger, his missionary organisation, SIM International, has confirmed.
SIM International Director, Phil Bauman, announced the development in a statement, expressing gratitude for Rideout’s release and confirming that he was in good health and in the care of United States officials.
“We are grateful to confirm that our good friend and brother in Christ, Kevin Rideout, has been released after over nine months in captivity,” Bauman said.
He added that Rideout was “in good health in the care of US officials” as arrangements were being made for his reunion with his family.
Rideout was abducted outside his residence on October 21, 2025, by three unidentified gunmen who reportedly fled towards Niger’s western Tillaberi region.
The area has been affected by attacks and insurgent activity involving armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Following his abduction, the United States Embassy increased security measures and issued heightened warnings over kidnapping risks in the region.
Reports indicate that Rideout remained in federal custody after his release and was in stable condition. Proof-of-life information had reportedly been obtained before he was handed over to US officials.
However, authorities and his missionary organisation have not disclosed details about how the release was secured or identified the group that held him during the latter part of his captivity.
Rideout’s release comes amid continuing security challenges across the wider Sahel region, particularly around the tri-border area linking Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, where armed groups continue to carry out attacks.
The missionary’s organisation is now working towards his return and reunion with his family following the lengthy period in captivity.
