Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has assured the Niger Delta Power Holding Company of Nigeria (NDPHC) of the state government’s intervention to facilitate the completion of the National Integrated Power Project along the Ikot Ekpene–Ikot Abasi axis of the state.
Eno gave the assurance on Tuesday when he received a delegation of the NDPHC, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije, at the Government House in Uyo.
The governor said the completion of the transmission project would significantly improve electricity supply in Akwa Ibom while supporting industrial growth and the broader development of Nigeria’s power sector.
“The completion of this project is critical to our industrialisation drive and to providing stable power for our people. Government will intervene to ensure outstanding issues are resolved,” Eno said.
He explained that the state government’s intervention would focus on resolving outstanding challenges and facilitating the completion of the 330kV transmission line, which is expected to strengthen electricity supply across the state.
Speaking during the visit, Adighije commended Governor Eno for his willingness to intervene, describing the gesture as an important complement to the administration’s development efforts.
“I sincerely commend the governor for the willingness to intervene. This kind gesture will significantly complement the development efforts of your administration. We are ready to collaborate with the state,” she said.
Adighije disclosed that the project, which commenced about 20 years ago, had been stalled by several challenges, particularly the non-payment of wayleave compensation to communities affected by the transmission line.
She said the delegation visited the governor primarily to brief him on the difficulties delaying the project and seek the state government’s support in resolving the outstanding issues.
The NDPHC chief executive also congratulated Governor Eno on the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
She expressed the company’s readiness to work with the state government in developing an effective electricity market framework that would strengthen power distribution and regulation in Akwa Ibom.
Adighije appealed to the state government to intervene in the compensation and other outstanding matters to enable the NDPHC to complete the project and deliver improved electricity supply to residents and businesses in the state.
The completion of the project is expected to support Akwa Ibom’s industrialisation drive while contributing to improved power transmission capacity in the Niger Delta region.
