Olukayode Popoola, Federal Works Controller, said on Thursday that the Eko Bridge would be partially closed from midnight on Friday June 4 for rehabilitation.
Popoola, who said this in a statement in Lagos, called on the public to avoid rumors that the bridge would be closed on Friday May 28.
He said construction would be speeded up to minimize discomfort for road users.
“The federal government will undertake the rehabilitation of the Eko Bridge and to facilitate its early completion, the bridge will be closed from midnight Friday June 4 to Friday August 13.
“Motorists are advised to ignore the rumor that the Eko Bridge will be closed from Friday May 28.
“The federal government regrets the inconvenience this may cause to the public,” Popoola said.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Lagos State Transport Commissioner Dr Frederic Oladeinde also issued a travel advisory on Wednesday evening to ease congestion ahead of the planned closure.
Oladeinde alerted the public, in a statement, to the planned emergency repairs of the road connected to the national stadium of the Eko Bridge from Costain in Alaka, which necessitated its partial closure.
The statement said the bypass tracks were important due to the planned rehabilitation by the federal government.
“Traffic from Apongbon to Alaka, Stadium, Inner Surulere or Ikorodu Road will be diverted to Eko Bridge to access the Costain roundabout in Iponri via Alaka and Funso Williams Avenue,” the statement said.
Motorists from Eko Bridge have been advised to cross Costain Roundabout to Abebe Village (by Nigerian Breweries Plc) via Eric Moore to Bode Thomas to Adeniran Ogunsanya, to access Shitta Roundabout through the stadium under the bridge to Funso Williams Avenue to Dorman-Long Bridge and Fadeyi– Ikorodu Road.
The statement further noted that motorists could access Apongbon via CMS Outer Marina Road to connect Ebute Metta Ikorodu Road to access their destinations.
He also indicated that a connection from Apongbon via CMS to Outer Marina to Adeniji Adele, Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle to Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu Road would be available.
The travel advisory further stated that road users should follow guidelines from state traffic management personnel, as adequate traffic directions and road signs will be available.
