Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a confrontation between an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer and a female passenger at Osubi Airport, officially known as Alfred Diete-Spiff Airport, in Delta State.
The authority disclosed this in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire.
According to the statement, the incident occurred during a routine security screening when the AVSEC officer questioned the passenger over canned milk and other tinned food items contained in her luggage.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into a verbal altercation inside the airport terminal.
The passenger was said to have protested after the food items were confiscated by security officials, who reportedly expressed concerns that the contents could spill during the flight.
She also questioned why airport officials conducted a manual search of her luggage instead of relying on the baggage screening equipment.
Agbebire said the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, had directed an immediate investigation into the incident.
He said the fact-finding exercise would establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and determine whether the actions of the officer complied with the authority’s operational procedures, service standards and code of conduct.
According to him, any personnel found to have violated FAAN’s regulations would face appropriate administrative and disciplinary measures in line with the agency’s internal procedures and extant civil service rules.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professionalism, ensuring passenger safety and delivering quality customer service across Nigeria’s airports.
FAAN also assured members of the public that the outcome of the investigation would guide any necessary actions to uphold accountability and improve service delivery within the nation’s aviation sector.
