Broad Economic Base Highlights Nigeria’s Re-entry Into FTSE Frontier Market Classification

    FTSE Frontier

Nigeria’s return to FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market classification today, September 21, is supported by strong representation across major sectors of its economy.

Six Nigerian companies are joining the FTSE Frontier 50 Index, spanning key sectors including telecommunications, banking, industrial materials and energy.

Their inclusion offers international investors exposure to a broader cross-section of Nigeria’s corporate market.

The additions include MTN Nigeria in telecommunications, GTCO, Zenith Bank and FirstHoldCo in financial services, Dangote Cement in industrial materials, and Aradel Holdings in energy.

These six companies represent 46.1 per cent of the 13 new constituents entering the index. Their inclusion gives Nigerian equities a prominent presence across diverse industries.

While ten Nigerian enterprises qualified for the FTSE Frontier Index, only six met the capitalisation and liquidity criteria required for inclusion in the FTSE Frontier 50 Index. Their selection reflects the scale and market presence of some of Nigeria’s largest companies.

The mix gives the index exposure to several of the country’s major commercial sectors while broadening the range of Nigerian companies accessible to international investors.

The entry of six Nigerian companies into the FTSE Frontier 50 Index comes alongside broader market improvements that facilitated Nigeria’s restoration to Frontier status after its removal in 2023. Enhanced foreign exchange liquidity, simplified capital repatriation and better trading access have helped resolve institutional concerns that previously limited international participation.

Re-entering global benchmarks with a diverse group of leading companies also provides international investors with broader channels for accessing the Nigerian market.

The inclusion of six Nigerian companies in the FTSE Frontier 50 Index comes as part of Nigeria’s return to Frontier Market status under FTSE Russell.

This places leading Nigerian companies directly in global focus. The presence of major banking, telecom, manufacturing and energy providers also gives Nigeria’s return to the market category a broad sectoral representation.
