Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, describing the device as one of the biggest redesigns in the history of its flagship smartphone.
The new device was introduced on Wednesday during Apple’s latest product event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, updated AirPods and new Apple Watch models.
According to CNN and The Independent, the iPhone Duo features a foldable design with a 7.6-inch continuous display when fully unfolded. Apple also described it as the thinnest iPhone it has ever produced.
When folded, the device features a screen roughly the size of a passport. Apple has also repositioned elements such as the home-screen dock and status indicators to the right side of the display, making them easier to access.
Introducing the device, Apple CEO John Ternus criticised existing foldable smartphones, saying they often felt like “two phones awkwardly stuck together.”
The launch marks Ternus’ first major Apple product event as CEO after taking over from Tim Cook earlier this month. The company is positioning the iPhone Duo as a significant rethinking of the iPhone rather than simply another addition to its existing lineup.
T
he iPhone Duo is expected to cost more than $2,000, according to The Independent.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with starting prices of $1,199 and $1,299, respectively.
The new models are more expensive than last year’s iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which started at $1,099 and $1,199.
The iPhone 18 Pro features a variable-aperture camera, allowing users to adjust the amount of light entering the lens. Apple also introduced a new thermal-management system designed to help regulate the devices’ temperature during use.
The company additionally announced an Apple Upgrade programme, giving customers the option to make monthly payments over 12 or 24 months and upgrade to a new iPhone at the end of the lease period.
New AirPods and Apple Watch Models
Apple unveiled the AirPods 5, which feature improved sound quality and noise cancellation. The new earbuds also include Siri-powered artificial intelligence features, including live translation.
The company also introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, with new health and artificial-intelligence capabilities.
Among the new features is a “Readiness” score, which combines information from a user’s recent activity, vital signs and sleep to provide an overall indication of their readiness.
Apple also introduced Audio Intelligence, a feature designed to recognise sounds such as sirens and alarms.
The company said these audio features would not store recordings and that audio data would be protected with end-to-end encryption.
The event represented Ternus’ first keynote as Apple CEO, with the new chief executive using the presentation to showcase the company’s latest products and outline his vision for Apple’s future.
