    Police

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged killing of Basit Kolade, a Lagos resident who was reportedly attacked by a mob on Freeman Street, Lagos Island.

The incident occurred at about 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, according to the police.

The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said preliminary investigations revealed that Kolade was travelling with his spouse from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.

An argument reportedly followed, and the situation escalated after the vehicle allegedly reversed and struck the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.

The incident reportedly attracted a group of people in the area, who allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.

While the attack was ongoing, Kolade’s spouse was reportedly rescued by women at the scene.

Kolade was subsequently rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. The motorcycle rider survived and is currently receiving treatment.

The police identified the four suspects arrested as Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.

The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons allegedly involved in the attack.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, has directed that all persons found culpable be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The police described the case as a homicide investigation and assured the public that it would be handled professionally and thoroughly.

Kolade’s death reportedly occurred just weeks before his planned wedding.
