Presidency accuses fake DG of opening CBN account with forged documents

The Presidency has alleged that Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who allegedly paraded himself as the Director-General of a non-existent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council cum Presidential Economic Advisory Council, fraudulently opened a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account using forged government documents.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, police investigations revealed that Adeyemi used forged official documents to deceive the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation into facilitating the opening of the CBN account.

It, however, clarified that investigators found no evidence that any government funds were paid into the account.

The statement further alleged that police uncovered 34 bank accounts operated by Adeyemi, including nine reportedly opened in the names of fictitious government agencies such as the FCT Investment Promotion Agency and the Public Private Partnership (FIPA-APP).

The Presidency also accused Adeyemi of forging an appointment letter to portray himself as a government official and using the document to seek a note verbal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate visa applications to the United States for himself and members of his team.

According to the statement, the alleged fraud came to light after the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, received complaints from officials of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council that another agency appeared to be operating in parallel with it.

The statement said Gbajabiamila subsequently petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force on Oct. 17, 2025, requesting an investigation into individuals allegedly forging appointment letters purportedly issued from his office.

The Presidency said Adeyemi was arrested by the police on Oct. 27, 2025, at his office in Abuja, where investigators recovered several documents and other exhibits during searches conducted at both his office and residence in Suleja.

It added that during interrogation, Adeyemi claimed that one Dolapo Babatunde Tanimola assisted him in obtaining the alleged fake appointment letter.

However, investigators later established that Tanimola had died in a fire incident at Kachi Hotel in Abuja five days before Adeyemi’s arrest.

The Presidency said police investigations concluded that the agency Adeyemi claimed to head never existed and that all documents recovered from him relating to the purported appointment were forged.

Quoting the police report, the statement said: “The act of the suspect constitutes criminal forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence, thereby bringing the office of the Chief of Staff to the President and the Presidency to disrepute before the public and international community.”

The Presidency said the police subsequently filed an eight-count charge against Adeyemi and two alleged accomplices before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Nov. 27, 2025.

It added that the case has been scheduled for hearing on July 27.

The statement also dismissed Adeyemi’s recent claim that he was appointed by the Chief of Staff, describing the allegation as false and inconsistent with statements he had earlier made to investigators.

The Presidency urged politicians and members of the public to refrain from relying on Adeyemi’s allegations against Gbajabiamila, maintaining that the matter is already before the court and should be allowed to proceed through the judicial process.
