Enugu State Police Command has dismissed as false reports alleging a planned infiltration, kidnapping and attack on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its environs.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Enugu.
Ndukwe described the report as misleading and deliberately designed to create fear and panic among students, staff and residents of the university community.
According to him, intelligence gathering and threat assessments conducted by the command have not revealed any credible information suggesting an imminent attack or security threat to the institution.
He said the police, in collaboration with the university authorities and other security agencies, had already put in place adequate security measures within and around the campus to ensure the safety of lives and property.
“The report is false, misleading and deliberately intended to incite fear and panic within the university community and surrounding areas.
“Intelligence and threat assessments conducted by the command have revealed no credible information or trend suggesting any planned attack or security threat to the university community,” he said.
Ndukwe noted that the individuals behind the report were members of a criminal syndicate operating under the guise of “Anonymous” and other social media aliases.
He alleged that the group had repeatedly circulated similar alarmist claims over the years in an attempt to undermine peace and security in the state.
The police spokesman disclosed that intelligence-led investigations were ongoing to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible for spreading the false information and their collaborators.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reassured the university management, staff, students and residents of the institution’s host community of their safety.
Giwa reiterated the command’s commitment to preventing crime and responding decisively to any threat to public safety across the state.
He urged members of the public to disregard the report and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
The commissioner also advised residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities through established security channels.
