Amnesty International has condemned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for what it called a “reckless and violent” comment against a journalist during a live television interview, warning it endangers press freedom in Nigeria.
In a post on its official X account today, the rights group highlighted Wike’s alleged remark: “If there’s any way to broke (sic) the screen, I would have shot him…” Amnesty described the statement as dangerous, potentially inciting attacks on media workers.
The organisation stressed that such language from a senior official risks normalising violence against journalists simply for doing their jobs. It violates Nigeria’s broadcasting rules, and Amnesty urged the National Broadcasting Commission to enforce standards strictly.
“This reckless and violent language from a federal cabinet member is unlawful and unacceptable,” the group stated, calling on Wike to immediately withdraw the comment and apologise publicly.
Amnesty emphasised that public officials must model responsible speech to protect democratic values and media safety.
