United States Senator Ted Cruz has said he will soon identify Nigerian officials allegedly responsible for the persecution of Christians in the country.

Cruz made the disclosure in a video posted on his verified social media accounts, where he addressed the security challenges facing Nigeria.

He commended former U.S. President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over the killing of Christians by Boko Haram and other extremist groups.

“There is no country on earth where Christians are more persecuted than Nigeria,” Cruz said.

The senator said he had been pushing legislation to reimpose the CPC designation and to sanction Nigerian officials found culpable.

“Thank you to President Trump for his leadership in imposing the designation, and more broadly, for fighting to stop the murder of Christians in Nigeria,” he wrote in the caption accompanying the video.

“Now we should take the next step and hold Nigerian officials accountable. I intend to be very explicit about who they are in the coming days and weeks,” he added.

The Nigerian government has yet to respond to Cruz’s remarks.

The CPC designation allows the U.S. government to impose sanctions on countries found to be violating religious freedoms.
