Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Dies at 93

Ibadanland’s Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has died, palatial sources confirmed to the Nigerian News Agency on Sunday in Ibadan.

The sources, who declared themselves anonymous, told NAN that the 93-year-old traditional ruler died at University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, early Sunday morning during illness.

Adetunji died a few weeks after two prominent traditional rulers in Oyo state, Soun of Ogbomoso and Asigangan of Igangan, joined their ancestors.

NAN reports that Adetunji, the 41st Olubadan of Ibadanland, ascended the throne of his ancestors on March 4, 2016.

A source from the palace and one of the traditional ruler’s aides told NAN that “the news was not far from the truth.”

The source, who declared himself anonymous, said that the Olubadan Council would soon make an official announcement regarding the disappearance of the traditional first-class ruler.

Also, some chiefs confided to NAN that the oba had joined their ancestors.

They said the official announcement would be made in due course.

NAN reports that the atmosphere in the city remained calm with many residents flocking to the traditional ruler’s Popoyemoja Palace to confirm the news.

Dozens of residents were seen in groups discussing the disappearance of the traditional ruler in the early days of the New Year.
