The event, tagged “Data on Trial,” is scheduled to hold on June 6 and will provide a platform for an open examination of how mobile data is consumed across devices and networks.

The telecommunications company said the initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is witnessing rapid digital transformation and a significant increase in mobile internet usage.

According to recent industry data, mobile internet subscriptions in the country have surpassed 153 million, while demand for data services continues to grow across sectors of the economy.

MTN said the public hearing would adopt a courtroom-style format designed to promote transparency, accountability and digital literacy among subscribers.

Under the arrangement, Nigerians will nominate and vote for a five-member prosecution team comprising technology creators, consumer advocates and other independent voices to represent public concerns during the proceedings.

The selected representatives will be empowered to question technical experts, present evidence and interrogate issues relating to mobile data consumption.

On the other side, MTN said a defence team made up of its technical executives, network engineers and independent mobile hardware specialists would provide explanations on data mechanics and network operations.

The company stated that both parties would be allowed to present evidence, analyse device-level data and call witnesses during the proceedings.

To ensure credibility and transparency, MTN disclosed that all diagnostic tools and technical demonstrations used during the event would be independently verified by global professional services firm KPMG.

The telecommunications operator said the verification process would help guarantee the integrity of the exercise and build public confidence in the outcomes.

According to MTN, the event will be streamed live on multiple digital platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, X and TikTok, as well as selected television stations, to enable broad public participation.

The company described the initiative as a unique opportunity to deepen public understanding of mobile data usage, network operations and device-related consumption patterns.

Industry observers say the exercise could set a new benchmark for customer engagement and transparency in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, particularly amid increasing consumer demand for clearer information on data usage and billing.

MTN noted that by opening its systems and processes to public scrutiny, it aims to foster trust, improve digital literacy and encourage informed conversations around mobile connectivity and data consumption.
