United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerians who are also U.S. citizens that they must use a valid American passport when entering or leaving the United States.
The mission gave the reminder in a statement posted on its official X account.
It said the requirement applies to all U.S. citizens, including children who hold dual nationality.
According to the mission, U.S. law requires every American citizen to enter and depart the country using a valid U.S. passport.
The mission also cautioned dual-national U.S. citizens against using their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
It explained that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels ESTA applications submitted by dual-national U.S. citizens using foreign passports.
The mission further advised U.S. citizens residing abroad, including those living in Nigeria, to ensure their American passports remain valid before making travel arrangements.
It urged travellers whose passports had expired or were close to expiration to renew them before embarking on their trips.
The mission also reminded travellers that many countries require passports to have at least six months’ validity before permitting entry.
It advised intending travellers to check passport validity requirements well ahead of their departure dates to avoid disruptions to their travel plans.
