Former Los Angeles-area gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis, suspected to have killed the late US rapper, Tupac Shakur, has been granted a $750,000 bail.

Shakur was fatally shot on September 7, 1996, in a drive-by incident in Las Vegas at the age of 25.

He was shot multiple times while leaving a boxing match at the MGM Grand Hotel.

Keffe D was arrested in September 2023 and charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

Davis’ arrest came two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home in neighbouring Henderson.

Documents said police were looking for items “concerning the murder of Tupac”.

Davis appeared before the court in Las Vegas on Tuesday for a hearing on his potential release on bail pending his criminal trial.

His legal team argued that their client was not a danger to society; neither was he a flight risk if they would agree for him to be bailed before the main trial.

They also maintained his not-guilty plea, adding that all he said about Tupac’s murder was for entertainment and monetary gain.

But the prosecutors contended that Davis was a cold-blooded killer who should not be let out on the streets.

The judge, Carli Kierny, later agreed to let him out pending trial but set the bail amount for $750,000.

Kierny also said that even if Keefe D was bailed, he would be confined to house arrest with electronic monitoring while awaiting trial.
