Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed a comprehensive investigation into allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The toddler passed away on January 6 at Euracare hospital in Lagos following a brief illness, prompting Adichie’s public accusation of criminal negligence by the facility.
In a statement dated January 10, Adichie detailed the circumstances of her son’s death, which drew swift government response. Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, conveyed the state’s deepest condolences, describing the loss as a profound tragedy and assuring the family of justice.
The Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has launched a thorough, independent probe to determine the immediate and underlying causes, scrutinising clinical protocols, professional conduct, and patient safety standards.
HEFAMAA, working with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, visited the hospital as part of ongoing inquiries and pledged full transparency upon conclusion.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised zero tolerance for negligence in Lagos health facilities, vowing that any culpable parties will face legal consequences. The government urged calm amid speculation, reaffirming commitment to robust medical oversight and preventing future tragedies.
