The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 19 suspected illegal miners in Edo State.
The suspects were apprehended during an operation carried out by the corps as part of efforts to tackle illegal mining activities and protect the state’s mineral resources.
The operation forms part of the NSCDC’s ongoing enforcement activities aimed at curbing unauthorised mining, which authorities say poses a threat to the environment and deprives government of revenue from the exploitation of mineral resources.
The suspects are expected to undergo further investigation to establish their roles in the alleged illegal mining activities.
The NSCDC is expected to provide additional details on the operation, including the location of the arrests and any equipment or materials recovered from the suspects.
Authorities have continued to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining across Nigeria, particularly in areas where unregulated mining has contributed to environmental degradation and other security concerns.
