South African police arrested a 27-year-old Nigerian national in Umbilo on Monday, seizing high-purity cocaine valued at over R600,000 (about N49 million), hidden in a sock inside his vehicle.
The suspect, who entered South Africa on a student visa, faces charges amid probes into a major drug trafficking ring with Nigerian connections. This marks his second bust—previously nabbed in 2025 with R400,000 worth of cocaine.
Details of the Bust and Follow-Up Raid
Metro Police Tactical Support Unit, Task Team, and SAPS KZN Counter Narcotics intercepted the man as he left his car on March 16. A flat search uncovered more drugs, pushing the haul’s street value higher.
eNCA reporter Dasen Thathiah noted: “Despite arrest, money kept flowing into his account in police presence.” The case is now with the Asset Forfeiture Unit.
Bigger Picture: Syndicate Crackdown
Authorities link the arrest to an ongoing investigation into a network handling narcotics trafficking, manufacturing, storage, and distribution. Several other suspects are already in custody.
This operation highlights rising concerns over cross-border drug rings exploiting student visas, with police vowing to dismantle the group.
