Nigeria’s anti-drug squad, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has arrested a 74-year-old grandfather named Ikwuakalom Nwakoro Emeka at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The man was caught trying to board a British Airways flight to London on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Officers found 11 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside his luggage, wrapped in foil papers and balloons among food items like dry ground pepper.
The grandpa told NDLEA he was heading to the United Kingdom for a vacation. But at the departure hall, during a routine check before flight BA082 to Heathrow Airport, officers searched his bags.
They discovered large blocks of the white cocaine powder carefully packed to look like everyday spices. This is a common trick drug runners use to fool scanners and sniffer dogs.
NDLEA officers acted fast based on tips and their sharp eyes. Cocaine is a dangerous illegal drug that harms health and fuels crime worldwide.
At 74 years old, many see this arrest as shocking—drug trafficking often involves couriers of all ages, even pensioners, hired or tricked by big cartels to beat airport security.
This bust shows NDLEA’s tough work at Nigeria’s busy airports to stop drugs from leaving the country. In the past, they’ve caught people swallowing drug pellets or hiding them in clothes, food, and shoes.
The agency keeps passengers and Nigeria safe by checking bags, bodies, and even cargo ships.
Mr Emeka now faces court charges for drug trafficking, which can mean life in jail or the death penalty under Nigerian law.
NDLEA praised the team’s quick action, which stopped over 11kg—a street value of millions of naira—from reaching UK streets. Travelers should know airports use body scanners, drug dogs, and random stops to catch smugglers.
This case reminds families and elders: say no to quick money offers involving travel. NDLEA vows to keep hunting drug barons and their helpers at borders, urging the public to report suspects. Safe journeys start with clean bags.
