MTN Partners with DStv to Host El Clásico Watch Party in Lekki

This Sunday, May 11th, the stage is set once again for another chapter in this fierce footballing saga. But this time, the stakes are layered with frustration, pride, and a longing for redemption, particularly on Barcelona’s side.

Leading telecommunications company MTN Nigeria, in partnership with Multichoice, owners of the DStv platform, will host a live watch party for the highly anticipated La Liga clash between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on Sunday at the Podium Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos.

The watch party, scheduled to begin at 1 PM, is being organised as a part of MTN’s ongoing efforts to support sports and entertainment engagement across Nigeria.

The event will offer football fans a chance to experience another explosive edition of El Clásico, one of the most popular and heated rivalries in world football, while offering opportunities to participate in fun contests and win branded prizes. There will also be exciting offerings from MTN and DStv, including exclusive content, deals, and more.

Just days ago, the Catalan giants crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in a tense semi-final clash against Inter Milan. A campaign that once brimmed with promise was halted on a rain-soaked Tuesday night, leaving fans and players grappling with what could have been. For a team that prides itself on European pedigree, the defeat cuts deep. And as fate would have it, there’s no better therapy for a wounded giant than facing its oldest and most storied rival.

Barcelona’s 3-4 loss to Inter Milan at home on Tuesday ended their Champions League run, sealing a semi-final exit just weeks after their Spanish league rival, Real Madrid, lost out to English team Arsenal in a 1-5 defeat.

Real Madrid, for their part, are no strangers to European heartbreak or glory. Their trajectory this season has been a mix of brilliance and inconsistency. However, as history has shown time and again, form rarely matters when these two clubs meet. From last-minute magic to silent celebrations, El Clásico has always been a battlefield of moments. Fans can expect top performances from their stars, including Kylian Mbappe, Vinícius Jr., and Yamine Lamal, as both clubs look to leave their European woes behind and focus on domestic dominance.

The match, which could have major implications for the La Liga title race, is expected to draw large crowds both at the venue and across the world.

Although the match will be played thousands of miles away, Lagos will feel every moment of the tension and triumph with the MTN watch party, as fans who understand the gravity of this rivalry and the emotions it stirs will be watching live.

MTN is actively contributing to the sporting community. As the official broadcast sponsor of the English Premier League on DStv in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria has consistently demonstrated its dedication to football, both locally and internationally, in addition to being a vital partner of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Their commitment to grassroots football is also evident through their sponsorship of the Nationwide League One (NLO) and the MTN CHAMPS athletics programme
