    MTN Foundation Partners BUAF to Empower Young Nigerians through their Beeta Playwright Competition

    MTN Foundation has partnered with the Beeta Universal Arts Foundation to hold the grand finale for this year’s edition of the Beeta Playwright Competition which saw the top ten finalists compete for the winning prize.

    The event which was held on February 7th, 2024, provided a platform for budding playwrights to display their literary prowess.

    The organizers aim to nurture emerging playwrights, encouraging them to tell authentic indigenous stories and showcase dynamic Nigerian writing talent. This year’s edition, unlike the previous years, had 40 selected candidates as against ten candidates formerly selected annually.

    In a remarkable victory, Olaide Nurat Mohammed, a native of Kwara with roots in Lagos, clinched the coveted title in the 6th Beeta Playwright Competition. Olaide’s journey into the world of play writing commenced at the tender age of seven while attending primary school in Lagos. She fondly recalls utilizing her writing notebook to sketch diverse characters and narrate stories to her friends, weaving tales inspired by these characters.

    Her exceptional talent and dedication have now been recognized as she emerged victorious, claiming a host of incredible prizes, including a $3,000 cheque, a laptop, and other valuable rewards.

    Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the MTN Foundation, Mrs. Odunayo Sanya, emphasised the need to commit to art and culture in Nigeria. “This is the third edition the MTN Foundation has done with Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, and over the years, many talents have been unveiled and their careers shaped greatly. We, at MTN Foundation, are committed to giving a platform for these young talents to thrive,” she said.

    Also speaking at the event, the founder of Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, appreciated the MTN Foundation for its commitment to the success of the competition. She said, “All finalists become part of the Beeta writers network and alumni, fostering a lifelong relationship. Additionally, finalists gain the opportunity to participate in the Beeta Arts Festival.”

    Among the distinguished attendees were Mrs. Solate Ovundah-Akarolo, the CEO of Five2 Media; Dele Momodu, the CEO of Ovation International; Odunayo Sanya, the Executive Secretary of MTN Foundation; Adokiye Ikpoki, the Managing Director/CEO of Chairborne Global Services Limited; Chioma Omeruah, popularly known as Chi Gurl, an accomplished actress and comedian; and the talented actress, Omowunmi Dada.
