Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has changed his shirt number from No.26 to No.1 after making just one appearance for the club.
The Argentina international initially chose the No.26 shirt following his £7.5 million transfer to Chelsea and wore the number during the Blues’ 4–3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge.
However, Martinez will now wear No.1 after Robert Sanchez joined Como on loan, leaving the number vacant.
Sanchez had previously worn the No.1 shirt but was reportedly told he could leave Chelsea following Martinez’s arrival.
Chelsea confirmed Martinez’s new number on Friday, meaning the goalkeeper could wear No.1 when the Blues face Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, should he be selected.
Martinez has also offered to sign shirts bearing his previous No.26, purchased through Chelsea’s official Megastore or website.
Supporters who bought the affected shirts have until October 4 to take them to Stamford Bridge, along with proof of purchase, for the goalkeeper to sign.
The change comes just days after Martinez made his Chelsea debut in the victory over Brighton.
