candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will pay ₦4,000 only once to verify their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) O’Level results, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have clarified.
The clarification was contained in a joint statement issued by the two examination bodies on Tuesday following consultations over JAMB’s newly introduced system for remote uploading and verification of O’Level results.
Under the arrangement, candidates whose admissions are regulated by JAMB are required to verify their WAEC results once through the Board. The verified outcome will then be transmitted to the tertiary institution where the candidate is seeking admission.
JAMB and WAEC stressed that candidates would not be required to pay another verification fee to their chosen institutions.
The statement read, “Candidates are to pay ₦4,000 only, once, for the verification of their WASSCE O’ Level results on the specified platform and not through their desired institutions.”
The agencies also directed tertiary institutions to rely on the verified results transmitted by JAMB for admission screening, processing and other administrative purposes.
“Tertiary institutions are to utilise the verified results shared by JAMB for screening, processing candidate admission and other administrative purposes. Candidates shall not be required to pay for another verification,” the statement added.
The development follows JAMB’s introduction of a technology-driven system that allows candidates to upload and verify their O’Level results remotely from home or any internet-enabled location.
The new process eliminates the need for candidates to routinely visit JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test centres solely to complete O’Level result verification.
JAMB had earlier stated that the initiative initially covered WAEC results and was designed to enable the Board to verify candidates’ academic records directly with examination bodies.
With Tuesday’s clarification, the verification carried out through JAMB will serve as a one-off exercise, with the verified result subsequently made available to the relevant institution.
WAEC has also authorised JAMB to share the outcome of the verification exercise with tertiary institutions for admission and related administrative purposes.
“WAEC has agreed to permit JAMB to share the outcome of the verification exercise with the relevant tertiary institutions,” the statement said.
The agencies said the arrangement was designed to prevent candidates from undergoing multiple verification exercises after completing the process through JAMB.
They added that the policy would reduce the financial and logistical burden on candidates while making the admission process more efficient.
“Candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the statement stated.
JAMB and WAEC therefore urged candidates to complete their WASSCE O’Level verification through the designated JAMB platform and retain their verification details for use during the admission process.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen the integrity of academic records and reduce the risk of fake or altered certificates being presented during admission screening.
According to the agencies, the initiative reflects their commitment to reducing unnecessary costs and simplifying the admission process while safeguarding the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records.
The clarification means that the ₦4,000 fee is neither an annual charge nor an institution-by-institution payment. It is a one-time verification fee for candidates whose admissions fall under the JAMB process.
