The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has introduced self-service fuel pumps at selected NNPC Retail stations, allowing motorists to purchase and dispense petrol without the assistance of a station attendant.
The initiative is part of the company’s plan to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service stations across the country within the next six months.
Under the new system, motorists can select the quantity of petrol they want, make payment through a mobile application and use a unique code to activate the fuel pump.
NNPC Retail shared a step-by-step guide on its X account to help motorists use the new facility.
How the Self-Service System Works
1. Download the NRL Fuel App
Motorists who wish to use the service must first download the NRL Fuel App through the link provided by NNPC Retail.
2. Select Fuel Purchase
Open the app, select Fuel Purchase and choose the type of fuel required.
3. Select a Participating Station
Browse the list of available NNPC Retail stations and choose one offering self-service. Participating outlets are identified by a green Self-Serve badge.
4. Enter the Amount and Make Payment
Enter the amount you wish to spend on petrol. Review the displayed quantity and price, then select Pay from Wallet to complete the transaction.
5. Receive the Self-Service Code
After payment is confirmed, the app generates a digital receipt containing the Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.
6. Activate the Fuel Pump
At the station, enter the eight-digit Self-Service Code on the pump terminal and press the hash key. Once the code is validated, pick up the nozzle and dispense the amount of fuel purchased.
NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative was part of efforts to transform conventional filling stations into broader energy and mobility hubs.
Speaking at the newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said motorists would be able to complete transactions on their phones and dispense the exact quantity of fuel they had paid for.
NNPC said the smart stations would offer more than conventional petrol sales, with plans to incorporate services such as electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and other mobility services.
The rollout is currently limited to selected NNPC Retail stations as the company expands the self-service model nationwide.
