The English Football League (EFL) has criticised UEFA after the European governing body scheduled Liverpool’s Champions League match against Atlético Madrid on the same night as Everton’s Carabao Cup clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
According to Reuters, the EFL said UEFA’s decision forced it to rearrange several domestic fixtures after Liverpool’s Champions League encounter was scheduled for September 9, the same date originally set for Everton’s home tie against Wolves.
The EFL said Everton’s match had been confirmed on August 28 following consultation with local stakeholders. However, UEFA announced on Saturday that Liverpool would host Atlético Madrid on the same evening.
The league explained that police and logistical restrictions prevent Liverpool and Everton from hosting home matches simultaneously.
“On Saturday, UEFA announced that it had scheduled Liverpool v Atletico Madrid for the same date, despite it being clear that Everton and Liverpool cannot play home fixtures on the same evening,” the EFL said in a statement.
The EFL said it held discussions with UEFA officials on Monday in an attempt to find an alternative solution. However, it claimed UEFA was unwilling to move the Champions League fixture because of the potential impact on overseas supporters.
As a result, Everton’s Carabao Cup meeting with Wolves has been moved to September 16. Liverpool’s League Cup fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, which was originally scheduled for September 16, has also been brought forward by 24 hours.
The EFL expressed frustration at UEFA’s handling of the situation, pointing out that domestic competitions have repeatedly adjusted their schedules to accommodate the expansion of UEFA’s club competitions.
“Over recent seasons the League has made a number of changes to accommodate the expansion of UEFA Club competitions — a decision which was made without adequate consultation with domestic leagues,” the EFL said.
The league added that UEFA’s refusal to cooperate was particularly disappointing given the disruption caused to supporters of the five affected clubs.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the EFL said.
UEFA had not responded to the EFL’s criticism at the time of the report.
The fixture changes will affect supporters of Everton, Wolves, Liverpool, Tottenham and Atlético Madrid, highlighting the growing challenges of coordinating domestic and European football schedules.
